Jack Latvala was a Florida state senator who was accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault. His troubles began with an allegation of sexual harassment of a senate aide. A retired judge was appointed to investigate and concluded Latvala harassed several women, Four of the five sexual harassment allegations were sustained by the Judge’s investigation but sexual harassment is not considered a criminal matter.
The judge surprised everyone by suggesting a criminal referral for exchanging legislative favors for sex. Latvala admitted to an affair with the lobbyist but denied giving favors for sex. The prosecutor did not pursue a criminal case as there was no proof one way or another. According to the Orlando Weekly,
“In interviews with investigators and Swanson, McLeod indicated Latvala never explicitly promised legislation in exchange for sex. But, she said “it seemed that it was expected” and that sex “will be part of the equation.”
McLeod said Latvala behaved as though it was something “he felt entitled to.””I tolerated it because it was part of my job,” McLeod said.
