John Hiatt was a member of the Maine State Republican Committee. He also was elected the Penobscot County Treasurer and was also elected to serve on the Bangor School Committee. In 2020, he won the Republican primary for District 9 in the Maine Senate, but withdrew before the election.
In 2021, he was arrested for one count each of aggravated invasion of computer privacy, stalking, and theft by unauthorized taking as well as two counts of harassment. He was using a device issued to him by the school district. This arrest led to a second as they found child sexual exploitation material with children under twelve on his phone.
In December, 2022, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor harassment and theft charges. The D.A. said, “What happened here is that Mr. Hiatt became too aggressive towards an individual that he knew. He was using a phone to harass her.” The judge sentenced him to ten days and $750. He served out his term at County Treasurer and will begin serving his sentence in early 2023 through an alternative sentencing program.
