Gary Lee Bell is a former Assistant Attorney General in Utah’s Child Protection Division. In his job, he prosecuted people who committed crimes against children. At home, he created child sexual abuse material.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip of child sexual abuse material being uploaded to social media. The material was sexually explicit pictures of children under the age of ten. This led them to Bell. They searched his home, found CSAM and arrested him.
Police requested he be held without bail because of how egregious the CSAM is and also because his grandchildren often visit his home and he frequently takes care of them. While investigating the CSAM seized from Bell, they found a photo of a child under two years being sexually abused. They noticed that the background looked like his living room. Comparing photos to pictures they took when he was arrested, they determined he also created CSAM himself. Charges of fourteen additional charges were added.
After his second arrest, while in the car to jail, Bell said he thought the pictures with the infant were erased because he was so disgusted with himself.
