222: Thad Viers

Sexual Harassment

Thad Viers was a committed conservative. As a teen, he was a page for South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond. He went to The Citadel. He worked for the Heritage Foundation. He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2003. He was planning a run for Congress in 2012. But things began falling apart.

In 2008, he pleaded no contest to threatening to beat up and sexually assault a man who was dating his ex-wife. He paid a $500 fine. In 2012, he suspended his run for Congress and decided not to run for re-election, and then resigned after he was arrested for stalking an ex-girlfriend. She brought an entire binder of letters sent after she broke up with him in mid-2011. He even contacted her father. She went to the police reluctantly because she didn’t want to harm his career. A police officer called and told him to stop contacting her on Dec 16, 2011. He contacted her twice more, on the 22nd and the 31st using someone else’s phone to evade a block on his number. He resigned in March 2012.

221: Nelson Hardwick

Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment

Nelson Hardwick was a South Carolina state representative. In the middle of his sixth term he resigned for health reasons that turned out to be a pending criminal investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and assault and battery. He was accused of harassing a legislative staffer whom he lured to his office where he touched her against her will. He pleaded guilty to assault and battery in the criminal case.

220: Jason Priest

Child Abuse, Familial Abuse & Violence

Jason Priest was a state senator from Red Lodge, Montana. He was a Tea Party Republican and was a standard issue far right pro-gun, anti-choice, “family values” Republican who clashed with more moderate colleagues. He chaired the Senate Public Health, Welfare, and Safety Committee. Then he got in an argument with his estranged wife. In his rage, he threw his 4-year-old daughter across the room where she hit her head and was injured. In the end, he assaulted his daughter, his estranged wife, her boyfriend, and a police officer who had been called to the scene. He was charged with four felony assault claims but pleaded guilty to all four when they were amended to misdemeanors.

219: Rod Jetton

Sexual Assault

Ron Jettons was once Speaker of the House in Missouri. He seemed immune to criticism continuing to work as a political consultant to colleagues while serving as Speaker. However, brazen defiance of criticism does not work with the law. He was indicted for assault for hitting and choking a woman during sex. He pled guilty in a deal that avoided jail time.

Dan Kirby represented Oklahoma House District 75 since 2008 and won the next four elections. It all came to an end after the news broke that state money had been used to pay off a sexual harassment and retaliation complaint against him in November. 217: Bryce Marlatt

Sexual Assault

Bryce Marlatt was a Republican Oklahoma state senator. His was elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 and 2016. He was elected the Majority Caucus Chair in 2014 and Assistant Majority Floor Leader in 2016. Big oil loved him, the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association (now the Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma) named him Legislator of the Year in 2013

He would probably still be in the Oklahoma Senate if he had not called an Uber in July 2017. When he got in the car, he told the driver. “Hey, you got nice tits.” He grabbed her while she was driving and kissed the back of her neck. He manhandled and propositioned her. She reported it to the police. He was charged with felony sexual battery. He resigned after he was released. He pled guilty in a plea bargain in which he got 90 days probation, a $500 fine, $50 to the victim’s fund, and court fees.

This was a gift agreed to by the victim out of compassion for his family. Then he went out and violated his probation by driving drunk. His probation was revoked and he was sent to jail for 90 days.

216: Raymond Liddy

Raymond Liddy is the son of G. Gordon Liddy, the Watergate burglar who infamously suggested people should shoot federal law enforcement agents from the ATF in the head because they wear body armor. He worked as state deputy attorney general in California. He was also convicted of possession of child pornography.

215: Anthony Silva

Child Sexual Abuse Material, Secret Photos or Recordings

Anthony Silva was elected mayor of Stockton, California, in 2012. From 2004 to 2008, he was on the school board for Stockton Unified School District. Stockton’s local elections are nonpartisan but local media identify him as a Republican. In 2015, the FBI confiscated his phone in an investigation into financial improprieties. They discovered a video made at a youth camp Silva used to run. He was providing alcohol and playing strip poker with minors. They let the local police know and eventually the police arrested him.

214: Rick W. Nelson

Child Sexual Abuse Material

Rick W. Nelson was the Republican Mayor of Stillwater, New York, from 2015 to 2017. He was arrested in August 2017, while his son was campaigning in the Democratic congressional primary to take on Elise Stefanik. He pleaded guilty.

When pleading guilty, he expressed contrition and claimed sex addiction that now that it has been discovered was being treated. His lawyer talked about the good he has done. He even volunteered to be a guinea pig in experimental treatment for sex addiction.

It all sounds good except this was his FIFTH arrest for victimizing children.

213: Charles K. Young

Child Sexual Abuse Material

Charles K. Young was the chairman of the James City County Republican Committee, serving two terms from 2010 to August 2016, when he resigned. He was 69, so perhaps he just wanted to retire, but that is also when a family member called the James City County Police and told them he was in possession of child pornography providing enough information for a search warrant. Forensic examination of his computers and other devices discovered he had over 22,000 still images of child pornography as well as videos with minor boys engaged in sexual activity.
