711: Jeremy Filbert

Jeremy Filbert was the mayor of Mitchellville, Iowa. In 2014, he ran for Iowa State Senate but lost the Republican primary. In April, 2015, he resigned as mayor and moved to Kansas City, Kansas, to take a job where he was soon arrested rape and aggravated sodomy of a child under thirteen, his half-sister.

He had been investigated in 2014 for inappropriate conduct with children at Mitchellville Elementary School. The Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that no criminal activity took place. Whether the conduct was criminal or not, people demanded his resignation, but he refused. (See clipping)

The state added additional charges and there was a jury trial. He was convicted on two counts of rape and three counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, and a count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He was sentenced to six sentence of life imprisonment with parole possible after twenty-five years, all running concurrently.

He appealed and lost.
