David Broadbent is a Republican party donor and a gynecologist in Utah. Ninety-four women filed a suit against him alleging sexual abuse. Some of them went to Dr. Broadbent for a premarital exam, a common health visit for Mormon Women. For many women, Broadbent was their first and only gynecologist so they had no experience to inform them they were being abused.
Multiple complaints were made to hospitals where he had privileges, but nothing happened. The Provo police had twelve investigations going. Women also complained to the licensing board that chalked it up to a poor bedside manner.
The lawsuit was dismissed this year, without prejudice, so it can be refiled. The judge said what Broadbent did was reprehensible but it falls under health care so has to be brought as malpractice. That was Broadbent’s defense: that what he did had to be pursued a different way. The lawyers are appealing. Sexual assault is not health care.
