Shae Sortwell is a Wisconsin state legislator whom state police referred for child abuse prosecution. The child had such significant bruises that a relative contacted police. The investigated and referred Sortwell for felony child abuse.
Sortwell defended himself by claiming the Bible required him to strike his child. The prosecutor decided not to file charges.
The relative found 5 four-inch bruises on the child and took the child to the hospital. The police thought the child was being hurt. The prosecutor noted that corporal punishment was allowed and it was hard to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the punishment was excessive.
