870: Sandy Smith

Familial Abuse & Violence

Sandy Smith won the Republican primary for North Carolina’s First Congressional District only to lose in the general. Two ex-husbands and her daughter have accused her of domestic violence. Her daughter filed for a protective order claiming that Smith “held me down by my hair and punched me in the face with a closed fist.” The protection order has been dismissed and she and her daughters are, according to Smith, on good terms.

869: Charlie Pierce

Sexual Harassment

Charlie Pierce is the former mayor of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula Borough and a Republican candidate for governor in the general election. His former Executive Assistant has sued him and the KPB, claiming she was subject to constant unwanted touching, sexual remarks, and advances. According to the suit, the KPB provided no way for her to report the harassment without reprisal.

867: Kenneth Daniel

Child Indecency, Child Molestation, Child Rape

Kenneth Daniel was the pastor of First Baptist Church in Chalkville, Alabama. After the Southern Baptist Convention released the SBC Sexual Abuse Task Force report in May 2022, he wrote, “I have served on staff in churches within the SBC over 38 years. I agree … this is tragic to victims and heartbreaking. Cases needed to be investigated. My question is about … releasing more information than necessary. … There is sexual misconduct in every profession, even churches. How do churches benefit from over exposure of poor leadership? Churches are struggling to keep doors open. How are we to evangelize and bring people to Christ?”

Child Molestation, Child Rape

He was also a child molester. When one of his victims reported that he sexually abused and assaulted her, the International Mission Board investigated and sustained her allegation, yet they did not report him to the police and it did not affect his career since he went on to work for the Southern Baptist Convention in Alabama.

865: Charles Kyle Adcock

Child Molestation, Child Rape

Charles Kyle Adcock was a youth pastor at Woodward Avenue Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals from 2010 to 2012. While youth pastor, he began molesting a child, a 14-year-old girl. Police recovered over 200,000 texts between Adcock and the girl over three years. When she was nineteen she went to police. He was charged with twenty counts of rape and nine counts of sodomy.

864: David Wayne Pendley

Child Molestation

David Wayne Pendley was a teacher at Faith Lutheran, a religious private school in Las Vegas, Nevada. A senior at the school went to the police and reported he sexually assaulted her several times. He invited her on a mission trip to Mexico where he became inappropriately personal. He told her he loved her.

Back in school, he asked her to dog sit while he and his wife went out of town. When she went to his house, he was alone and he raped her. His abuse continued for six months and he reacted with anger when she said she did not like it. He told her that his heart was connected to his penis, that god made him that way, that no one would believe, etc.

863: Mark Curtis Adams

Child Sexual Abuse Material, Solicitation of a Minor

Mark Curtis Adams was a Sunday School teacher and church deacon at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Carmel, South Carolina. He also used the social media app KIK to entice minor children and produce child sexual abuse material. He pretended to be a 17-year-old boy online and engaged in enticement of an 11-year-old girl. Her mother discovered his communications with her and went to police. He was arrested in June 2017. In May, 2018, he pled guilty to the enticement charge and was sentenced to ten years plus 15 years of supervised release.

862: John W. Adams

Child Sexual Abuse Material

John W. Adams was the pastor at the anti-gay Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Darbydale, Ohio. In 2007, he was arrested by police at his home for downloading child sexual abuse material. He was caught because police were monitoring a CSAM website. A year later, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years probation with no internet access and having to register as a sex offender.
