Doug Brown is the chair of the Buncombe County, North Carolina, Republican Party. He remains the chair despite being found guilty of assaulting a woman at a local town hall meeting of Republicans. The woman he shoved is a registered Republican, a member of the local school board.
She had been censured by the party for opposing a measure to change how school board members are elected, a tactic to increase the number of GOP board members on the board. She also supported Democratic school board candidates who also opposed the measure.
The altercation led to him shoving her, something he characterizes as a brotherly/sisterly gesture.
The judge declared he was clearly guilty beyond a reasonable doubt but given the state of politics today, this was par for the course and gave him no punishment so long as he doesn’t do anything similar in the coming year.
