Mark Curtis Adams was a Sunday School teacher and church deacon at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Carmel, South Carolina. He also used the social media app KIK to entice minor children and produce child sexual abuse material. He pretended to be a 17-year-old boy online and engaged in enticement of an 11-year-old girl. Her mother discovered his communications with her and went to police. He was arrested in June 2017. In May, 2018, after pleading guilty to the enticement charge, he was sentenced to ten years plus 15 years of supervised release.

Mark Curtis Adams was indicted in U.S. District Court in Greeneville in June 2017 on two charges: enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity and production of child pornography. Earlier this year he pleaded guilty to the enticement charge. On May 3, Judge Leon Jordan sentenced Adams to 120 months in prison followed by 15 years of supervised release. The court also recommended Adams participate in a sex offender management program while incarcerated. According to the plea agreement, an Auburn Hills, Michigan, mother contacted law enforcement in March 2017 about some communications taking place between her 11-year-old daughter and Adams. At the time, Adams was pretending to be a 17-year-old male named Tyler Boone, and the two were communicating via Kik. The mother reached out to authorities because of the sexually explicit nature of the messages Adams was sending, court records state. An undercover investigator posed as the girl and in March 2017, Adams initiated contact, making sexually explicit comments, including how he would perform sexual acts on her. Adams also made multiple requests for nude photos, the plea agreement states. Law enforcement tracked the IP address of "Tyler Boone" to Adams' home in Mount Carmel and to Eastman Chemical Company. In April 2017, Adams admitted to law enforcement he opened the Kik account and that he deleted and reopened it dozens of times because he knew what he was doing was wrong. Adams further admitted he used Kik to chat with minors and ask them for nude photographs, though he claimed he never saved the images nor did he know the minors' identities.
