830: Carl Johnson

Carl Johnson was the mayor of West Bountiful and a bishop in the LDS church. He was arrested in September 2022 and charged with molesting at least three children.

The abuse is alleged to have happened between 1985 and 1996. One victim was just 5 when the abuse started and 8 when it ended. Another claimed she was 5 and the third said she was preteen.

When he was arrested he admitted he had a hard time controlling his sexual urges and admitted molesting at least six children, one as young as two. The three who came forward all said he told them to be quiet, warning them against telling anyone.

“Johnson admitted that he has a problem of controlling his sexual urges and has struggled with this problem for most of his life,” Deputy Kurt Jemmett wrote in a probable cause statement.

He was charged with seven felonies and pleaded guilty to two for which he was sentenced from 9 years to life for one felony and 1 to 15 for the other. The sentences are consecutive.
