Newt Gingrich called him a friend. Still he lost re-election in 1992. In 1996, he was campaigning to get his job back when he was indicted with six counts alleging child molestation.

Sherman Lee Criner, a GOP candidate for the Deleware state Senate, was accused of molesting a child. Because his wife is a judge, the investigation was carried out by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) rather than local or county police who would be frequently appearing in court before the judge. Ernie Konnyu was a Republican Representative from Silicon Valley when he was accused of sexual harassment. He served one term in Congress and three in the California House of Representatives. There he pushed the workfare bill, requiring people on welfare to work for their benefits. He went to Congress and was one of authors of the welfare reform bill that forced people on welfare to work.
