Michael James Shover is the pastor at Pella’s Christ the Redeemer Church. He was at the Iowa State Capitol. He got in a shouting match with LGBTIQA protesters and said they were all devoid of morals. He then asked “Why is pedophilia wrong?” The video went viral and he claims criticism is out of context and that it was a rhetorical question. Maybe so, but why does he entertain the question at all?
Joshua Wine was a National Guard recruiter in Iowa. He has a long criminal history going back to 1999, though until he was charged with sexually abusing a child in March 2023, the charges were mostly for drinking, driving, and driving on a suspended license.
In March 2023, Wine was charged with abusing a child. He sexually abused a ten-year-old girl three times, at least, in 2022. You can follow the case here.
Jaron Rosien is Mayor of Washington, Iowa. He ran in the Republican primary for his Iowa state house district. He lost the primary. He is accused of sexually assaulting a man who was playing pool with friends in Rosien’s bar. There is video showing Rosien appearing to kiss the man while groping his genitalia.
Daryl Johnson is one of the January 6th insurrectionists and was sentenced to thirty days in jail for his actions that day. He has since been arrested for secretly recording women at a tanning salon. He was charged with invasion of privacy and interference with official acts.
Gordon Grabau was a Special Deputy Sheriff in Linn County, Iowa. In July, 2022, he was arrested for possession of child sexual abuse material. The FBI served a search warrant on him in July 2021. A special deputy is a volunteer deputy. For example, a sheriff’s search and rescue “posse” might have many special deputies. They get paid a nominal sum to qualify for worker’s comp, but are mainly volunteers. They are still in a position of public trust.
They found over 160,000 files of child sexual abuse material, including BDSM child sexual abuse material and CSAM involving minors under twelve, even infants and toddlers. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in April, 2023
He was originally arrested in 2007 for illegal gambling. When investigators were cataloging evidence they stumbled on child sex abuse material and added possessing CSAM to his charges. He appealed, arguing that finding something related to a crime that wasn’t what they were investigating is an illegal search and must be excluded. He lost his appeal. He was sentenced to 78 months and then put on the sex offender registry after his release.
Jeremy Filbert was the mayor of Mitchellville, Iowa. In 2014, he ran for Iowa State Senate but lost the Republican primary. In April, 2015, he resigned as mayor and moved to Kansas City, Kansas, to take a job where he was soon arrested rape and aggravated sodomy of a child under thirteen, his half-sister.
Gary Lee Hansen served on the Sac City City Council until 2015. In 2017, he was charged with sexually abusing a six-year-old child. The child reported it when she was twelve. According to the police report, Hansen admitted to the abuse. He was convicted on two counts of lascivious acts with a child
Steve King was a Republican U.S. representative from Iowa from 2003 to 2019. He was infamous for his extremist views, his anti-Black, anti-immigrant, and antiabortion views. He did manage to shock the world though with his defense of rape. He actually asked if not for rape and incest, “would there be any humanity left.”
Bill Dix was Majority Leader of the Iowa Senate when Kirsten Anderson was awarded $2.2 million in a sexual harassment suit. She settled for $1.75 million. When he announced the settlement he continued to insist she was fired for poor performance despite her being fired seven hours after she sent a memo detailing harassment in the office. He said he believed her allegations as well. Several Iowa politicians plus staff were revealed in testimony to have sexually harassed or been inappropriate with women in the office.
