Scott Ritter was a U.N. weapons inspector from 1991-1998. Until we went to war, he was a vocal critic of US inaction on WMD. When that changed, he was a vocal opponent of the Iraq War, maintaining there were no weapons of mass destruction. He remained a Republican despite his opposition to the war, blaming both parties for not listening to him.
He was arrested for soliciting a minor, caught in an online sting. He chatted with a police officer posing as a 15-year-old girl. He was told to turn himself in and he did. This was his second arrest as the first time the charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to five and half years in 2011 but paroled in 2014.
Even after he was convicted on five felony counts and two misdemeanors last year, Ritter remained, as he always has, self-righteous and inclined toward seeing conspiracies. “I’m not humiliated,” he told me recently, when I suggested he should be. “It’s nobody else’s business. And anybody who seeks to make it their business, they should be humiliated. They should be ashamed. They should be embarrassed. What I did or what I didn’t do is nobody’s business but my own and my wife’s. And the fact that this had been dragged out into the public eye the way it has speaks volumes about our society.”
