Prosecutors allege that Aaron Scott Merritt sexually abused at least four girls—horrifically, sustained over years in the late 1990s and early 2000s. What makes it even more vile is not just the abuse itself, but the betrayal around it: multiple victims claim the wrongdoing was known to congregation leaders for years, yet it was ignored, covered up, and left to continue.
For years, rumors circulated inside the Kenai-area Jehovah’s Witness congregation—claims that Merritt, a trusted young leader known as “Scotty,” spent too much time with underage girls, and that his behavior was wrong. More than one former member says they warned elders directly. Instead of protecting children, leaders enforced silence.
The result was monstrous. Abuse wasn’t reported to police until 2002—after it had already gone on for years, and in the same year Merritt was excommunicated. Even then, no fucking criminal prosecution followed for a long time. The children grew up with the harm and fear lingering over them, while the congregation moved on—years passing into decades—until prosecutors finally acted.
Now, a long-overdue reckoning is underway. Prosecutors have charged Merritt with 20 counts of child sexual abuse involving four victims, all allegedly tied to the Jehovah’s Witness hall in Kenai. Court documents allege the abuse occurred between 1998 and 2002, though victims say it began earlier—possibly in the mid-1990s. One victim says she was abused starting at age 5.

COURT DOCUMENTS
Superior Court Judge Jason Gist set Merritt’s bail at $250,000 cash. Both of Kenai’s two other Superior Court judges have recused themselves from Merritt’s case.
