The administration of Frank Hughes High School handed out tee shirts that said ‘Rep. David Byrd’, ‘State Representative District 71.’and ’19’ to all the students and told them to wear them to the State Capitol on a field trip. They sent out this message, “Seniors should report straight to the cafeteria for roll call and you will receive your senior 19 T-shirts from Rep. Byrd. Once you receive your shirt, please go to the bathroom and change into it, and then safely place the shirt you had on somewhere in the school. Buses will leave as soon as shirts have been distributed, and we will return around the time school is out.”
Rep. David Byrd was embroiled in a scandal that began when three women alleged sexual misconduct while they were high school students and he was their coach. It is grossly inappropriate to ask teenagers to wear a shirt that promotes any political candidate, especially someone accused of sexually assaulting teenagers. Byrd’s nephew, Ryan Franks, is the principal of Frank Hughes High School.
