777: Salvatore J. Cordileone

Salvatore J. Cordileone is the Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco. He goes out of his way to make his partisan positions known by ordering priests not to give communion to Nancy Pelosi and by creating division within the Diocese with his viciously homophobic dicta. He has a lot to say about women’s rights and gay rights, but when it comes to pedophile priests, he’s not so vocal.

Cordileone remains the only California bishop yet to release an internal list of priests “credibly accused” of sexually abusing children. In fact, he has refused to publish the names of identified pedophiles in the Archdiocese, instead listing priests in “good standing.” This is not twenty years ago. He is still protecting pedophile priests in 2022.

SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has produced a list of abusers because the Archdiocese refuses to do so.

Given that public disclosure of pedophile priests has become the norm, it seems quite retrograde to still insist on maintaining an organizational cover-up of priest abuse. It’s particularly offensive when Cordileone exploits the scandal of abusing priests to claim they were gay and the real problem is homosexuality.
