Ty Burns represented the 35th District in Oklahoma’s House of Representatives until he resigned in August, 2025, after pleading guilty to one count of domestic violence and two counts assault.
Burns was accused of trying to gouge out his wife’s eye on Thanksgiving in 2024. He was also accused of running his wife’s former mother-in-law and his daughter off the road in April 2025.
For these crimes, he pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor domestic abuse and two counts of misdemeanor assault. He was given three concurrent sentences of one-year suspended sentences and mandatory domestic violence counseling/intervention training. After his suspended sentences end, he will also serve one year of unsupervised probation. Since the sentences are suspended, he will serve no jail time at all, but the convictions will remain on his record.
He initially planned to simply step back from leadership but with calls to resign from the Governor and others in his own party, he decided to resign from the legislature. He blamed PTSD from his military and police service for his actions.

How is it possible that this man was in a position to pass legislation for his state relating to domestic abuse 19 days after committing an assault using his motor vehicle – an assault on two females! – one of whom was his own teenage daughter, the other his daughter’s Grandmother!!! His case was hushed up from APRIL 2025 when the investigation commenced into this assault/abuse, and other crimes of assault against his wife came to light, right through to the 28th of AUGUST when the case was completed and the details released. It was only after his court case and guilty plea that the situation became common knowledge. During this time he had even voted to reduce the penalties for domestic abuse!!! It was only after he slipped through his court appearance like a well greased pig and received barely a slap on the wrist and a misdemeanour finding, that his fellow legislators heard the truth. The “all-in-one” and “unusual same day adjudication” that he was allowed when the details of his arrest warrant, his guilty plea and his sentencing – all completed in one short court hearing – were published. It seems to have created barely a ripple on the surface of what, to all appearances, is a totally corrupt and complicit system. What a disgusting person he is. What a disgusting legal system to allow him to get away with NO time spent in prison and only a misdemeanour finding when he admitted to committing repeated abuse months apart. He did not even have the decency nor respect for his constituents nor for the members of the legislature to resign immediately he was charged, and in fact, refused to resign completely after his guilty verdict until he was pressured to by his fellow legislators Even then he did not resign immediately but put it off until 1 October 2025.
