Joa Arpaio is most well-known for glorying in abusive prison conditions and his racist hatred of Latinos. He was Trump’s favorite sheriff and was convicted of contempt of court for refusing a judge’s order to stop racial profiling. Trump promptly pardoned him. However, contemptible as his treatment of prisoners and immigrants was, he is on the list for his office’s mishandling of more than 400 sexual assault cases.
In one case, a 13-year-old girl was raped. The rape was reported, but the rapist was not arrested. So he raped her again. That was just one of 432 mishandled sex-crime cases that were not investigated, closed without an investigation, or just forgotten. Five years after this investigation revealed the rot in the sheriff’s department not one person was punished. It seems Arpaio was trying to wait it out the way his department waited out rape cases.
