John Collins, a Republican who served twenty years on the Eatontown City Council, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and one count of witness tampering. He was sentenced to ten years, sex offender registration, and parole supervision for life.
He was a middle school teacher and organized a community band. He abused his position to form sexual relationships with two minor children, sexually assaulting them. The witness tampering charge was the result of Collins emailing one of the students to try to influence her testimony.
From the first article, “authorities have stated that the sexual contact with the two victims did not take place until after both had graduated the school and joined the municipal band, a community-based activity, not sponsored by the Eatontown Board of Education.” They had not graduated from the school system but from the middle school. The relationship with one began when she was thirteen. This formulation from the school to abdicate responsibility is offensive.
