779: Ronnie Floyd

Ronnie Floyd was the President of the Southern Baptist Conference until his resignation in late 2021. The SBC was heavily criticized for lack of transparency about sexual predator pastors. Floyd opposed releasing information about these predators. He thought transparency would lead to more criticism of the SBC and open it to lawsuits. SBC’s leaders were pressured to waive attorney-client privilege so an outside firm could investigate allegations of abuse.

When they decided to waive privilege, he resigned in protest. Perhaps he knew what the report would conclude, that Floyd and other officials were so focused on avoiding legal liability they did nothing to protect the people who attended member churches.
