Richard Bucci is a Catholic priest who took it upon himself to excommunicate forty-four Rhode Island legislators who voted to codify abortion rights. He sent out a notice informing the public that the named people could not receive communion, witness a marriage, read during a funeral, or serve as godparents. For him, abortion is worse than pedophilia. “Pedophilia never killed anyone.”
Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee said she was asked to leave a relative’s funeral and banned from delivering the eulogy by Richard Bucci. Ironically, Hagan McEntee led the passage of a law extending the statute of limitations for child sex abuse, perhaps because her sister was abused by a priest at the same church where Bucci now presides. So yes, Bucci argues that voting to protect abortion access is worse than raping children.
