Clifford James “C. J.” Neesmith was chairman of the Port Wentworth Planning Commission when he was arrested for possession child sexual abuse materials on September 12, 2022. He was removed from the Commission the following day. Coincidentally, the Port Wentworth City Council discussed restructuring the Planning Commission on September 14 and reorganized it in October. In the past, Neesmith was also the Chair of the local Chamber of Commerce.
When he was arraigned later in the month, bail was set at $25,000 and he had to surrender his computer and other devices that connected to the internet. His cell phone had to not be able to connect to the internet. When he was arrested his work computer was seized. According to police, his accessing CSAM has been going on at least six years.
