189: Nicholas Kettle

Nicholas Kettle was a Republican state senator in Rhode Island. He was arrested on charges of video voyeurism and extortion after his former long-time girlfriend filed charges. He was also charged with extorting a page by threatening his job unless he had sex with him. He resigned from office.

He shot pics of his then-girlfriend and sent them to a friend in New Hampshire. He took a plea deal and apologized to her in court. He was sentenced to a three-year suspended sentence.

The extorting sex case was dropped for two reasons. The page refused to return to Rhode Island to testify and Kettle produced chat logs of the page and him talking over several months, conversations that were flirtatious and friendly. This was perceived as exculpatory and it well might be. However, there are many examples of people who remained friendly with people who assaulted them because of the power dynamics

188: Bob Jones University

Bob Jones University has a long history of blaming the victims of sexual assault–even when they were assaulted elsewhere. In 2011, the role of BJU board member Chuck Phelps in covering up the rape of a 15-year-old and his demand that she apologize to the congregation for allowing herself to be raped.led to some BJU students speaking up about the University’s blaming victims of sexual assault.

In response, BJU hired an independent organization, GRACE, Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment, to investigate the matter in 2012. They let people make reports online and promised to protect students from repercussions when they did interviews. As they neared completion of their report, they were fired. The backlash led to rehired GRACE whose report disclosed a pattern of covering up sexual assault and punishing victims.

Christopher von Keyserling was a member of the Representative Town Meeting of Greenwich, CT when he sexually assaulted a woman employed by the town. A Republican, he celebrated Trump’s upcoming 2017 Inauguration by reaching through a town employee’s legs and pinching her groin, an action Trump bragged about on tape. He said he no longer had to be “politically correct.”

Initially, the woman only told her supervisor and had no intent to file a criminal complaint, but learned he had done this to other women at the office. Von Keyserling had served 32 years and ran for re-election, he lost. He was found guilty and sentenced to house arrest

George Faught was the state representative of Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA, when in his zealous defense of banning abortion in cases of rape and incest, he said pregnancy is how “God can bring beauty from ashes.” In the debate on his bill banning abortion in the case of fetal abnormalities, a Democratic pro-choice representative asked him if rape was the will of God. It’s evident from his response that he thinks so. He left the House to run for Congress, unsuccessfully.

Dan Shooter was a Republican state representative in Arizona when he was accused of sexually harassing women and creating a hostile work environment. The first accuser was a fellow Republican, Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Rita. After she came forward, eight additional women came forward. A firm was hired to investigate and found several of the complaints credible. He was expelled from the House by a 56-3 vote. He sued but his case was dismissed in state and federal courts.

Will Lewis was the Greenville County, SC, sheriff when he raped a subordinate. He was forced to step down a year later.after she published a now-deleted blog post accusing him of rape and stalking, forcing her to quit her job out of fear for her life.

184: Stephen Dalton Baril

Stephen Dalton Baril was a student at the University of Virginia when he raped a fellow student. He entered an Alford Plea, admitting there was enough evidence to convict him but still claiming innocence. He faced jail time but got a suspended sentence. While he did not have institutional power at the time, his grandfather was a former Virginia governor and his father was a former candidate for Attorney General.

Ken Starr is most infamous as the sex-obsessed independent counsel who chose to include prurient sexual details in The Starr Report and in the Senate trial questioning of Monica Lewinsky. That is not why he is featured on this list even though his desire to humiliate and debase Lewinsky certainly displayed misogyny. However, it was in his role as the President of the largest Baptist school in America, Baylor University, where he earned complete ignominy by covering up the rapes of several women enrolled as students there. Protecting the football players was much more important than protecting women. It seems even today Baylor University would like to pretend it never happened.

David Garland was the interim president of Baylor University, the largest Baptist school in America and an extremely conservative school. He was appointed after Ken Starr resigned in the midst of the rape scandal. The school commissioned an investigation and several women came forward filing a federal lawsuit claiming Baylor did not protect female students…

Kimberly Guilfoyle was a FOX News host for The Five when her assistant filed a 42-page draft complaint documenting how Guilfoyle sexually harassed staff, including showing them dick pics. She was fired from FOX News in 2018 and became Trump’s campaign finance chair and Donald Trump, Jr.’s girlfriend. The assistant was paid upwards of $4 million.
