Philip Gunn is the Speaker of the House in Mississippi, but will not run for reelection. He is one of those theocratic legislators who write their religious beliefs and bigotries into the law, such as forcing a child who is raped by a family member to bear her rapist’s child. He also has a history of blocking expansion of health care resources for pregnant women and opposed Medicaid expansion. So, in word he is “pro-life” but not in action. As far as his legislative history, he doesn’t even care if the fetus is healthy or of the child survives post-delivery, nor does he care about the life of the mother. Any expansion of health care, despite his words, is not happening. Mississippi refused $1 billion in federal health care aid per year out of anti-Obama spite.
Gunn advised the church elders of Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton, Miss., not to report what the child molester John Langworthy told them when they investigated his tenure at their church. He told them that was privileged information that could not be revealed. That is untrue. They are obligated by law to report child molestation. He actively worked to frustrate investigators working on the Langworthy case.
