553: Clyde “Ed” Sniffen

Ed Sniffen was the Attorney General of Alaska. He resigned when the details of a sexual relationship he had with a high school student were revealed by the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica. Ironically, he had been appointed because the former Attorney General Kevin Clarkson resigned due to his own sexual misconduct.

He was twenty-seven, working as an attorney and a coach for her school’s mock trial competition team. She was just seventeen. The relationship lasted two years. Even though the age of consent was sixteen, it was a crime for teachers, coaches, and counselors to have a sexual relationship with their student. It’s just common sense that such conduct would be prohibited.

In September, 2022, he was indicted for these crimes. In April, 2023, the charges were dismissed due to the the statute of limitations at the time of the abuse.

* He is not the Ed Sniffen who was recently appointed to be the director of Hawaii’s Department of Transportation.
