Mickey Conroy was a Republican Assemblyman from Orange County, California. He was best known for introducing a bill to paddle graffiti artists. His other claim to fame was the $386,240 award the state paid to Robin Boyd, an aide who sued him for sexual harassment. She claimed she was subjected to crude remarks and unwanted hugs and kisses.
Boyd originally made the complaint to the Assembly. The Assembly investigated and their investigation found him guilty, but they did nothing and refused to settle with the woman. They also kept their findings secret until it was leaked to Conroy’s election opponent.
The jury agreed that the State was guilty of not doing enough to prevent sexual harassment and that Conroy inflicted emotional distress, but did not find him guilty of battery.
The original award offer was $139,000 but the state refused her offer. Two years later, she settled for $360,000.
