826: Eric Schmitt

Eric Schmitt is Missouri’s junior Senator, previously he was the Missouri Attorney General. He was highly criticized for his lack of action in addressing violence and abuse at Christian boarding schools in Missouri. As Attorney General he was heavily criticized for his inaction toward the ongoing abuses at Christian boarding schools in Missouri. Agape is the most famous one and DHS records show that he was repeatedly informed that abuse and enslavement was happening at Agape.

Matt Franck wrote about abuses at Hope Baptist Academy in 2002. Everybody knew but did nothing. In Missouri, thanks to a feckless state government, “Christian” schools were not even required to register. In 2021, reacting to shopping reports of abuse, the state passed tepid regulations that now require the residential schools to let the government know they exist, conduct background checks, and follow state health and safety rules. But enforcement takes money.

The Department of Homeland Security sent notice of allegations of trafficking, slavery, and abuse to Schmitt. Nothing was done. He said the county government should act, but the county DA begged for help as they didn’t have the resources.
