1539: Ernest McCarthy

Ernest D. McCarthy, 83, of East Toledo is a former Republican candidate for state Senate and Toledo City Council has been indicted on charges related to possessing child pornography.

Mr. McCarthy was arrested Oct. 30 on a single count of pandering obscenity involving a minor and booked into the Lucas County jail. McCarthy was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on nine counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, seven counts of illegal use of a minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance, and four counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor or impaired person.  

McCarthy was sentenced to 20–21 years after pleading guilty to 15 felony child sexual abuse material charges involving victims as young as 2.

POLITICAL BACKGROUND

Mr. McCarthy ran twice for city council — once in 2013 for an at-large seat and then again in 2015 for District 3 — and one time in 2014 for state Senate.

In 2017, the Lucas County Republican Party nominated Mr. McCarthy to fill a vacancy on the Lucas County Board of Elections, but the nomination was rejected by then-Secretary of State Jon Husted.
